line in the sand

wanted to call her,
"It's beautiful outside, let's go sit in the park,"
I saw my arm around her. smiling, laughing, watching couples holding hands walk by. Green trees swaying.

but I just stared at the phone for a moment before hanging up.
each number one step too close.
one step over the line in the sand.
