merry christmas, it's you

You know that christmas tree,
out in the park, with it's yellow
lights,
and 20 foot stance.

The one I was sitting near last night,
midnight,
on a bench with a flask of whiskey
down my coat pocket
when it was 15 degrees
and the sky was orange,
with impending snow.

I know you smiled sometime last night
and I wonder,
if you knew that christmas tree,
out in the park
that stood 20 feet over me
with a dress of yellow lights,
reminded me of our bedroom.

Did you hear me coughing
did you see me shivering
did you see me,
drink that whiskey?

did you listen,
when I said merry christmas
and thought about climbing under
that christmas tree
20 feet high
out in the park
15 degrees

climbing under your dress of yellow lights
back into our bed,
of holiday joy.

we made choices, we made promises.
I said words I didn't mean,
[tell me I'm forgiven]
and now this is my first christmas tree without you

but it's you, merry christmas, it's you

20 feet high,
by 15 degrees
at midnight.
